Taxpayers from the salaried class are becoming increasingly technology friendly, the Income Tex (I-T) department's figures indicate.

The department registered a 136 per cent rise in the number of people filing their annual tax returns online. The last date for the salaried class to file returns was August 4.

This year, more than 12.22 lakh salaried individuals in the country filed their returns online from April I to August 4 as against only 5.17 lakh people last year for the same period.

When the staffer mumbled something about lunch break, the officer asked him: "What time is the lunch break in consumer courts? You either save yourself or your boss."

If you have failed to file your income tax (I-T) returns by July 31, the last prescribed date, don't fret. The department has extended the date till August 4.

Soon, you may pay stamp duty online

Stamp duty payment in Maharashtra will be much easier with the state government approving a Bill of online registrations.

The amendments on these regards were made in the Indian Registration Act, 1908, and were passed by the state legislative council recently.

The amended act would be sent to the Centre for final approval. With the amendments, people would be able to do online registrations to any stamps and registration office.

A property buyer can also scan documents at home and send it to the registrar who can conduct an enquiry before registering the documents, an official from the revenue department said.

An e-receipt will be sent to the person after deducting the stamp and registration charges.

According to the official, the government will also provide nationalised and cooperative banks with the power to register leave and licence agreements.

Considering the burden on registrars in registering agreements relating to deposit of title deed, sale certificate and irrevocable power of attorney relating to transfer of immovable property, the stamp duty offices will work in two shifts, the official pointed out.

These documents would be compulsorily registered with the said amendments, the official added.
