Bangladesh imitates Pak, blocks Facebook

A week after Pakistan Blocked Facebook due to blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohammad, Bangladesh has temporarily banned the social networking site because of objectionable content. " The government move followed the publication of caricatures of the Prophet deemed hurtful to the religious sentiments of the country's majority Muslims Population," a telecom regularity official said.

Hundreds of protesters marched through Dhaka on Friday and demanded action against Facebook, and those accused of defaming the Prophet.

The Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday arrested a man in Dhaka for Posting" Obnoxious" images of the country's political leaders, including prime minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia.

The blocking of Facebook, popular among young Bangladeshis, triggered protests by users.

"This was a wrong decision and should be withdrawn immediately." Mohammad Zafar Iqbal, a Professor, said. "Instead of freezing the whole system, efforts should be made to find and punish the guilty," he added.

Facebook was barred by a court in Pakistan because of an online competition asking users to draw caricatures of the Prophet.

The video-sharing website YouTube was also blocked for some time.

The publication of 'offensive' cartoons of the Prophet in Danish newspapers in 2005 had sparked protests in Muslims countries. Around 50 people were killed in demonstration over the cartoons in 2006.
