Chinese hack UPSC website

Bangalore: After an attempt to enter a defence proc u re m e n t website, Chinese hackers have now targeted the Union Public Service Commission site. While the hacker gave a link to a tractor-manufacturing company in China, other links appear to be downright dangerous.

Stickman consulting director Satheesh G Nair, who handles cyber crime investigations, said the other two links, which are in Chinese, were capable of installing bots on a computer. “This gives them access to data on the server the website is connected to and the number of computers attached to it. This could be dangerous,’’ he said. The motive for hacking the site is unclear, but after hacking it, a lesser-known website can get a reference link from it. When a person opens such high-traffic websites, he’s referred to this website too. After obtaining high traffic, the hacker sells the website in the open market. “Some domain traders have advertised this site value at about $6,50,000. This happens when traffic information about the website leaks,’’ Nair said. “If he was here to check routes to the state or central data centre, it is significant,’’ Nair said.
