Mention Facebook applications to most people, and there is a fair chance that they will think that you are talking about popular games such as Farmville or Mafia Wars. However, lurking beneath the surface of one of the world’s most popular social networking sites is a whole host of applications that will not only let you have fun, but will also allow you to perform a number of useful tasks…
Picnik: For those who love their photography, this is definitely the app to have. It not only acts as a handy online editor—letting you edit pictures of you and your friends—but also lets you share them on other web sites such as Twitter, Picasa and Flickr. And a very neat touch is the option to save images on your computer; letting you choose the format and quality that you wish to have. Very handy, we think.
iLike: Apple might have made headlines with Ping, its music-oriented social networking service launched last week, but alas, it is available only to areas that have iTunes Stores (India does not). Meanwhile, you could try out iLike, the online music discussion community on Facebook that lets you talk about your music collection, favourite artistes, dedicate songs to your friends and do a whole host of other things musical. Zoho online office: Yes, there’s a whole office suite lurking in there on Facebook, complete with a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation tool; all of which are fully compatible with MS Office. So you can open, edit, create and share documents and presentations, just as you would on your computer. Ah yes, you will need a “free” Zoho account to use this offering. Causes: This one is perhaps the best Facebook app of them all, simply because it brings together people who are trying to make the world a better place to live in. You can chip in with your support to causes that vary from preventing domestic abuse to research for a cure to breast cancer to stopping the erosion of the world’s forests. You can campaign, collect signatures and even donate money. Whenever someone calls Facebook flippant, steer them to this app. Of course, remember to sign up for it first.
Facebook Files: You can upload much more than just your videos and photographs to Facebook using this powerful app powered by Box.net. It literally converts your Facebook into a thumb drive where you can store all your files, and access them from just about any computer by simply logging in to your account. There is a 1GB cap on storage space, but more can be purchased.
Visual Bookshelf: Book lovers are going to love this application. It lets you arrange the books you have read; are reading and would recommend that others read in your Facebook account. You can also track what your friends are reading and their recommendations, and of course, get into discussions and arguments on whether Percy Jackson is better than Harry Potter and other literary matters.
Flixster: If iLike is all about nattering and sharing musical tastes and preferences, Flixster is about discussing movies. You can rate the latest films, share the films you like, create lists, browse trivia and of course, check how compatible you are with your friends depending on the films you like. A great place to talk about films, really.
That’s just the tip of the Facebook app iceberg. There are literally dozens of applications out there that actually help you in your daily routine.
And, if you do not like any of the apps out there, you can try Facebook’s Application Builder app to make your own; even if you do not know any programming.
