Three young Indiaborn co-founders of a tech startup will ring the closing bell at the NASDAQ on Monday.
The trio behind MyCityWay should not have any trouble finding their way to the tech exchange in New York's Times Square since the technology they have developed and won them this honour, and much more, is aimed at making large cities easy to navigate.
And, of course, the first app they developed in October last year was for New York.
MYCityWay is essentially an application of app for smart phones. It's available for free for the IPhone, IPad, IPod, and for phones running Google's Android operating system. Another version for the Blackberry will be available come September. A web version is scheduled to be launched through their portal in mid August.
The app is available for 11 cities in the United States and for London. But MyCityWay's founders hope to have five Indian cities, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai covered by the end of this year, starting with a roll out for those last two metropolises by September.
MyCityWay is run by Archana Patchirajan, Puneet Mehta and Sonpreet Bhatia Last year, their first offering, the app for New York, won three awards at the NYC Big Apps competition organized by the city. They later received seed capital for their venture from three firms including New York City's Economic Development Corporation.
Mehta explained what the app can do: "It's one-stop app. All the components up into an experience. Say you go for dinner, then for a Broadway show and take the subway home, this app will have details for all that." And more. The New York app has 65 elements or microapps, that provide users with information about transit traffic, events, reviews, locate landmarks, wifi spots, stores parking and even allow for buying tickets and findings and booking a table at a restaurant. It also offers classifieds, like jobs or apartment listings.
It's hyperlocal, getting the user usable data on these elements while he or she is in that area. But it's growing. MyCityWay will also cover the entire country.
What is an App?
App is shorthand for application. It's a software programme that's written for a smartphone or a web-enabled mobile device that can either be downloads directly or can be downloaded to a computer and the transferred to the phone. Apps can come in many varieties - some are simple games, others are useful, for instance an app that can teach you how to do yoga, or an app that can send you weather alerts or even apps that can give you latest sports scores. Apps were originally developed for Apple's IPhone but are now available for Google's Android operating system and for Blackberry.
