Cyber experts say incidents like the alleged rape of a minor college girl by her were senior, were not new because similar instances have been reported since social networking sites gained popularity in the country.
"The basic problem with social networking sites is that an online identity can be created by someone and the can be used to target a vulnerable person," said Sahir Hidayatullah, head of research and development,l at MIEL E-Security Private Limited.
Hidayatullah said many people instantly start believing whatever a person says on the online medium.
"But in real life, we generally don't believe in whatever the person says in the first or the second meeting," he said.
Experts claim criminals look out for people who are vulnerable.
They especially target lonely people, women and children. They said the anonymity the Internet offers often encourages people to commit crimes because they believe they will never be identified, let alone caught.
Internet expert Vijay Mukhi said though one comes across all kinds of people online, it is better to do a background check of a person before befriending him or her or wanting to take the friendship further.
"Background checks help a lot because we never know whether the information mentioned in the online profile of a person is true or not," Mukhi added.
Experts also advised Internet users against putting out any personal information on the Net.
