NEW DELHI:

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on Monday quietly strengthened the security of their online counselling procedure the entrance exam.

As reported by HT on July 3, IIT faculty members were concerned the online counselling process, not being secure, could be misused by rival candidates.

Students who clear the IIT entrance test select their disciplines and institute through the counselling process, which was conducted face-to-face till last year. This year it went online.

The online counselling during the first round of admissions in June required a student to enter his registration number and the first four characters of his name to select his course and institute. Once a selection was made, it could not be changed.

Concerns arose that a student knowing the name and registration number of other students could fraudulently enter poor choices for them to give himself better opportunities.

The IITs have added a third requirement - date of birth - that students now have to provide to make their choices. Publicly, however, the institutes claimed there was nothing wrong with their online process.
